hey jerod, these are the reviews from fucktooth 12. --- I like reading zines. I read them more than anything else. I don't understand people who don't read them because they're really missing out. My picks of the month, ie, not only are they worth the money, but they're the best things I've read this month or this year: 10 Things, Second Guess, and Fat Nipples. // all reviews are by Angel unless otherwise noted, // I accept zines as trade but you probably won't hear back from me til after I review your zine in the next issue so I can just send you the zine that has your review in it (coz I think most editors want to know what people are saying about them) // if you send me an 8 page zine I probably won't trade you a current issue because it's just not worth it // all zines are standard half size unless other wise noted // jd's size is 8.5 x 7 inches // an asterisk (*) means it's worth the money they ask for it. Oh, and if it's free try and send stamps anyway and ALWAYS write to the editor and tell them what you think once you get it, believe me, they appreciate it. * 10 Things Jesus Wants You To Know: Dan Halligan and David Parker, 1407 NE 45th St #17, Seattle, WA 98105 // 28 pgs, offset, full size, $1.50 // Excellent zine. Excellent. One of the best around. Interviews with North American Bison, Holden Mo, The Sinister Six, Cherubs, Zeke, 7 Year Bitch, The New Bomb Turks and The Rickets. Live stuff, a few columns, free classifieds, news items. I only wish there would be more commentary because what's there is great. From Victor's column: "...the beauty of the Punk Rock philosophy has always been that it hasn't got one, or that it is as manifold to it's adherents. Unlike the PC crock, Punk Rock owes nothing automatically to society, recognizes no axioms of responsibility, no original sin and no burden of guilt. It defines itself at the individual level, constructs its own values and lives by its own conscience, if any. it calls bullshit all the time with one eye glued to the mirror." * BRV: Al, 11473 Chautauqua Tr, Brecksville OH 44141 // free, full color cover, offset? 56p // Very well done personal zine. good stuff. sure it seems like a take off on Cometbus #29, a travelogue, but it holds its own. Al and Melissa make the pilgrimage to the Bay Area and Al leaves us with at least one journal entry every day, usually more. Al has a loose style that is very readable and appealing. A first hand account of what it's like to go to Berkeley, I'd read this if you've never been but are planning on going. * CANVAS #5: Jamie Kennard, Skidmore College Box 641, Saratoga Springs, NY 12866 // offset, 20 pgs, $0.75 // Interviews with the Doughboys and the Figgs. Movie, zine, and record reviews. A good column by Tracy on college life and an even better one on racism/etc by Jamie at the end. worth the money. Good and non pretentious. * Dangerfox: Julian Myers, 604 E State St Ithaca, NY 14850 // 40pgs, $1? // I like this zine. great attitude. DF is funny as well as angry. Jul has a lot to say. This one includes some good stories and rants, comics, reviews, and a hoax Iggy Pop interview. I like the "Dangerfox" drawings. Good read. Dream Scene Magazine: 38 Rossi Ave #1, SF CA 94118 // SASE // all I have here is a call for submissions, and it sounds VERY interesting, the idea is great. they print a zine a dreams. not aspirations /dreams, but the real nocturnal subconscious thing. so write for a copy and let me know if it's any good Excitable Underwear #3: Robyn, POB 429115, Cincy, OH 45242 // full size, 28 pgs, $1 // pretty good little rag here. Interview with counterpoise, an interesting one with Resist, trip diary with The Queers and The Slobs (just okay), lots of reviews. My only criticisms are that if she'd make the print smaller / put more on a page, it would cost less to make. * Fat Nipples #2-3: Chris Conway, POB 2554, Trenton NJ 08690 // 44pgs, #2: jd's size #1, #3: one page, free // I don't know why Chris sent this to me, I don't know where he got my address, but I am so glad he did. How long has it been since you've read a zine that didn't just entertain you but forced you to think as well? this zine asks a lot of questions and covers more topics in one issue than I ever could: trendiness vs being different, the death penalty, jail, drug laws, war, American culture... you name it and most of it written by the editor himself. It's been a long time since I've seen a zine that wasn't just cheesy band interviews and opinions on issues that are arbitrary and really don't matter. Forget all of the other crap you've been getting in your mailbox and get this one. Fuh Cole 4: Dave, 3540 N Oakland #5, Milwaukee, WI 53211 // 36pgs, jd's size, $3 // If you're not in to the queercore/ queer punk scene that practically revolves around Toronto and everything associated with it, you would like Fuh Cole. This has a lot of letters, a great review section (creative), well done cover design, a travelogue of Toronto and a little bit on SPEW 3, interview with James Robert Baker, and stuff about Minneapolis. And a bonus little mini zine inside. check it out. Good but not worth $3 (I'm cheap, remember?) Gay Dragonoid Sex Manual Vol 2 // Dr Agon, POB 1282, Ft Collins CO 80522 // Full size, one sided, 34pgs // Adults only. This has to be seen to be believed. Just look at the title. Look Within #5: Dan, POB 70736, West Valley City, Utah, 84170-0736 // $1, 16pgs // This is a good zine if you want to learn about Krishna/Vishnu/Hinduism (i think that's all right). My only qualms with it are that I think that the editor should make his goal more clear. It is a collection of seemingly unconnected stories, myths, etc. I think something on why the ed. subscribes to this philosophy or what he hopes to accomplish by putting out Look Within would help it's focus a great deal. kinda funny to see band photos/ads thrown in to the mix. I still don't understand Krishna's relation to straightedge, punk or any other kind of "rock" but that's probably just because I don't know enough about it. Machines of Loving Grace #3: 1435 Main St #7, Cincy OH 45202 // offset, $1, 40pgs // Mostly poetry, comics and art. If you like poetry, check this one out, they have good ideas. * Mousie 3 // Box 440478, W Somerville, MA 02144 // $3, full size, 66 pgs // As always, an excellent issue. Creative, interesting, always a god read. Lots of comics that I like (the ones included here are neither boring nor unartistic). A female oriented zine but not with the exclusionary attitude of a lot of GRRRL zines. MT.TERROR #1: 2300 Central SE, #147B, Alb. NM 87106 // 24pgs, $ ? // A very good essay on the first page examines the advantages of the crack house "vocation" vs life in the service industry. More essays and a lot of comics. A few are good, the rest are....interesting. Lots of cut and paste stuff. * The Penny Dreadful Review #1: C Ra McGuirt, 6680 Charlotte H-9, Nashville TN 37209 // 10pgs, color paper, full size, 1 penny // Basically just another poetry "zine" or newsletter, mostly about sex. It differs from most because it's mostly contributions with few of C Ra's own poems. Lots about sex. Oh, and I found out that they same prison in Texas, oh excuse me, correctional facility or whatever they call it, that refused an issue of Fucktooth also refused Howington's "Bukowski and Serial Killers." PDR is definitely worth it's penny. Pulp: POB 2771, Amherst, MA 01004 // offset, 8pgs, $.50 // the zine that goes with the Seven Inch Ska Club - definitely worth looking into if you are into ska. The zine has articles on the Skavoovee tour, The Pacers, and Gals Panic as well as some networking info. * Rage Magazine: POB 1289 Lake Worth, FL 33460 // $ ? 12pgs // This guy has the best editorial style I've seen in a long time, very entertaining and easy to read, I only with there was more of it. I guess this is a first issue and a preview of what is to come - I'm interested in seeing what this Jack guy can do with a little more effort. this issue is two kinda of editorials, poems on collage/photo backgrounds and a comic. * Reconnoiter #6: Bob Foley, 1776 Kokomo Dr, Hubbard, OH 44425 // 24pgs, full size/glossy $1 // Lots of record and zine reviews, a little commentary and some bad jokes. Also interviews with Brandon Smith, Sean of the Bad Genes, and The Black Watch. Bob is an intelligent sounding guy and his commentaries are well researched and genuinely interesting reading. Riot Grrrl Press Catalog September - November 1993: RGP, POB 73308, WDC 20009 // Catalog of zines by females. Lots of stuff in there, good idea but I disagree with the way they do business. Sure, they "take the burden off of young women who can't afford to distribute their zines" by doing the copying and mailing themselves (editors send them one flat copy, they make the dups) BUT they keep all the money themselves while charging more than just what it costs to copy and send the zines. So they're making the money and the zine editors aren't. yeah it's good for publicity but it's like me paying them to distribute my zine when I can just do it myself. Yeah fucktooth is in there too, but only way back issues. * Second Guess #9: Bob Conrad, POB 9382, Reno NV, 89507 // 64pgs, $2, offset // Great! Best I issue I've seen from Bob yet. His smart ass cynicism really comes out in the first half where he talks about going to shows, living in reno, and being in bands. Lots of social commentary. The rest of the zine has an interview with the ANSWER ME! folks, and a huge thing from Donny the Punk about lecturing in Russia, plus the usual mail and reviews. Sty Zine #15: 300 N Bryan, Bloomington, IN 47408 // mini, 40pgs, $1 // Good little zine here, lots of photos of skates, reviews, and opinions. A bit of commentary on zine reviews and "the scene," though most of it is from a less political side like ones on star wars and pinball, walkmans, and food. Vomit Comics: Ryan Michael Dunlavey, 9 West 14ths st, Ocean City, NJ 08226 // jd's size, $1 or trade // lots of good comics here, my favorites are the single page drawings, because some of the comics, while having great art, are a little lacking in the storyline. "Dogfucker" is just bizarre. * Yello Submarine No 5 // POB 81, Elmira, NY 14902-0081 // $1.98, offset, 44pgs // Yet another excellent zine. the only cut and paste -drawn from other sources - collection of odd articles and facts that ever gets my attention. Always a good read. Articles, cartoons, comics, news, ads and zine reviews.
