As we begin a new year and a new administration, we would like to recap for our members some of CARALÕs accomplishments in the last few months: September 15, 1992 CARAL PAC opens its Sacramento campaign headquarters. September 22, 1992 CARAL launches an intensive Voter ID program to identify thousands of pro-choice Republicans whom CARAL has targeted as the potential margin of victory in the November election. October 1, 1992 CARAL hosts a luncheon with Roe v. Wade attorney Sarah Weddington and holds a press conference with Bay Area nurse practitioners to denounce the Bush administrationÕs enforcement of the gag rule. October 5, 1992 CARAL holds a candle-light vigil to mark the implementation of the gag rule and the beginning of the new Supreme Court session. 150 pro-choice supporters listen to speeches by activists, doctors and ministers and enjoy the music of Bing Aradanas, a local folk singer. The chilly and breezy night does not dampen spirits, as candles burn bright and the mood is one of reflection and inspiration. The candle-light vigil also kicks off NARALÕsand CARALÕs Ò30 Days to Save ChoiceÓ campaign. October 10, 1992 CARAL welcomes Leslie Watson-Davis, NARAL Campus Organizer, and student leaders from around the state to a grassroots organizing workshop in Davis to prepare students for the upcoming election. October 15, 1992 The one year anniversary of the Clarence Thomas confirmation to the US Supreme Court is marked by a rally in front of Senator John SeymourÕs office. Less than a month later, pro-choice Californians remembered SeymourÕs vote to confirm Thomas by electing Dianne Feinstein as their new Senator. October 28, 1992 CARAL PAC Mails over 800,000 pro-choice slate cards to voters throughout the state. October 31, 1992 CARAL covers the state by phone and rally. Pro-choice activists welcome Dianne Feinstein, Barbara Boxer and Kate Michelman at exuberant Los Angeles., San Diego and Sacramento rallies while volunteers continued to staff phone banks all weekend in Los Angeles, San Francisco and Sacramento to get out the pro-choice vote on November 3. November 3, 1992 CARAL staff and volunteers spend election day passing out pro-choice voterÕs guides and phoning pro-choice voters to remind them to get to the polls.
